It's funny how bill paying can be confusing. I heard from a female colleague who is a professional (perhaps modern) woman, who likes to pay her share only because she thinks it's fair. But the man she meets with (perhaps traditional man) gets really upset. Then she gets upset for being treated as less than what she is. Moral of the lesson: there's no win either a man pays or not because you just don't know what kind of women you are meeting. And it's not an easy subject to discuss beforehand with someone you barely know.
