The best solution to that is to offer to pay but not insist on it if the lady in question objects strenuously. Obviously you will know by the end of the first date whether she will be very independent minded and insist on paying her fair share, so just don't press the issue. Of course I have been on dates where the girl has demurred, but then secretly really still wanted me to insist on paying...
