Old Country Vs New Country
This was taken from my current blog and North wanted me to post up for you guys to read and give your thoughts.
Korean Market Conversation Posted 06-28-2008 at 08:53 PM by MrSweden I was at this very nice korean market which my sister bought produce. I was standing and waiting for my sis to get the stuff and I could not stop listening to this one chinese woman talking to a korean lady about her lazy son which he was there with her. The thing that bothered me alot is the fact that most asian parents from the old county...regardless of asian race tend to "put" down their kids in front of other people..doubting them and giving them low self esteem. It's no wonder most asian kids tend to "prove" themselves to their parents and rebel against what parent wishes are. And yet these same parents brag to their relatives and friends living in the old country about how wonderful America is and that their son/daughter will marry a nice "asian" person. WTF?!!! I wanted to say something to that chinese woman and tell her that her son will be a success and stop complaining about him...she decided to have a child..so she better just let go of trying to force her old ways.He will always have "Westernized" views in life and cannot relate to her "Old Country" ways because he hasn't lived there.

bad parenting is bad parenting. Either way we are raising shame based children. West and East neither one is right. Everyone needs to step away from whatever cultural crap you carry around and really look at effective parenting. We all need to step out of the molds we were raised with and evaulate ourselves and take the time to educate ourselves in parenting skills and not just use the excuse of that's how it was done to me and look how I turned out.
The measure of an effective parent is not just how much money their child makes, or how happy they seem, but they are a successful WHOLE person.

This all goes back to the times of showing respect and giving face in traditional asian cultures. Goes back centuries! Putting oneself or one's kids down in front of a friend or stranger is a way to show respect to the other party by making them appear superior. In a sense it's the opposite of the western way of bragging about your kids which can be just as annoying. It's part of making one feel humble than a showoff; showing respect than 'in you face' me me me attitude. Obviously in modern parenting this doesn't bode too well as negativity in child years has a direct outcome in their mentality as an adult - skepticism, condescension, bullying, neagativity, shyness, reservedness, etc are example characteristics fostered from continued practice. What asian cultures sometimes instill with good intentions nevertheless ends up the complete opposite - sometimes. There is a fine balance between being proud and not arrogant and humble yet not condescending or insulting sarcasm.
