Ok so what does it mean when your sign has a element to it? And what if the element and the sign traits dont coincide.

Explain what you mean? Sample?? I'm no horoscope expert but this seems interesting..

I understand astrology because I use to do astrological charts for people. But give me a clearer idea what you mean by the element not coinciding with the sign traits.

Well I was looking up Chinese Zodiac signs. Mostly because I saw this movie Eve and the Fire Horse. Anyway Apparently even though those who believe in the Chinese Zodiac have a animal they also have a element. So you can have Fire Horses or Metal Horses etc etc

Wow, I never knew it was so vast! It's like the more common astrology with sun signs, moon signs, and houses.

If anyone's interested, I've found that the more accurate sort of astrology (if you believe in such a thing) is the Mayan calender. Quite interesting stuff including predictions. End of the world stuff.

There is an old adage "disclose not Heaven's will". That's why ancient sages very rarely write their knowledge on destiny. When they did, it's in a very cryptic language. It seems this is changing though.

I'll try to give a brief explanation where it comes from, and the true meaning of the zodiacs. It's going to be very long, I'm afraid.

There are three lucks that affect a person's life:

1. Heaven luck
2. Earth luck
3. Human luck

Heaven's luck can be gleaned by calculations based on a person's birth time: year of birth, month of birth, day of birth and hour of birth. That's why in Asia, when a baby's born the exact time is recorded.

It's also why (traditionally) babies names need extensive calculations. To balance the elements calculated from birth time. It's not just a random combination of words to make a good sound.

The calculation is based on Qi and its flow. There are two aspects of Qi: Yin and Yang.

There are five phases/changes of Qi:

1. Wood
2. Fire
3. Earth
4. Metal
5. Water

Calling them elements is not correct, but sometimes makes it easier for people.

Each five changes (or elements, if you wish) have yin/yang aspects.

In birth calculation (heaven's luck) from the four birth numbers (called four pillars by ancient treatises), one can find a person's destiny.

There are three major groups:

1. heavenly stem
2. earthly branch
3. hidden elements

The earthly branch have 12 combination of yin/yang and 5 elements:

1. yin metal
2. yang metal
3. yin water
4. yang water
5. yin wood
6. yang wood
7. yin fire
8. yang fire
9. yin earth
10. yang earth
11. yin earth*
12. yang earth*

(* There are 2 combinations that have doubles. I can't remember which.)

To make it easier to memorize, ancient sages assigned animal symbols on these 12 combinations. That's where the zodiacs came from.

Qi flows continuously, sometimes it's in the "earth" phase, sometimes "fire", and so on. Thus, there are "earth horse" years, for example.

These animals are just symbols. It doesn't mean a person born in a "rabbit" year has a rabbit personality. Even the chinese letters for these symbols differ than the letters used to write regular animal names.

The personality of a person is much better represented by his/her "day heaven" element. The element calculated from his/her day of birth, in the heavenly step group.
