Shanghainese accent leads to monotone English?

A guy I know grew up in Shanghai and is now in the US, and he speaks English in a very monotone way. I have occasionally wondered whether there was something wrong with him, like... Is he depressed? Is he just kind of boring, with no enthusiasm for anything? Or even... Is he somewhat unintelligent?

But last weekend it was suggested that the explanation might be simply that he is from Shanghai, because the Shanghainese accent is flat with few tone changes in the voice.

Does this sound right? Has anybody heard of this connection before, between being from Shanghai and speaking monotone English?

Is there a way he can get over it, or is he probably doomed to bore people with that flat speech pattern?

I really like him, and I have mentioned this issue to him. He told me that he senses it, but he really doesn't know what to do about it.

Any thoughts?

This is the first time I've heard such a thing. I don't think Shanghainese has fewer tone changes, and I don't think it affects one's English in that way. Maybe he's related to Ben Stein?

LOL

It was another Shanghai native who suggested this (who is younger than the first guy and who has been in the US longer, and is taking acting lessons and so he does not speak monotone).

I think it's him, lol. No different than native english speakers who speak english monotonously. One of my first gf's had friends from Shanghai and nope, they don't speak english or mandarin less pronounced. It's was fun listening to taiwanese mandarin accent and shanghai accent conversing.

It could be a result of being tone deaf. I had a couple of employees who were tone deaf and they spoke in a very monotonous tone.

sojoman is on a distinguished road
To me, Shang hei wu is very pleasant and has lots of variations in speech...I would think if anything Mandarin would be like that, like people on CCTV
