it took me 2 years to learn english. you just got to expose yourself to the situation where you have to speak foreign languages.

I would love to go to Korea or Spain for an extended stay but I just need to get over this pesky fear of flying.

I have been on a plane once in my life. A three hour flight from NY to FL and that was a few year ago. I have found a new fear, fear of crossing the ocean. I believe I will get over it. I want to travel, I just might need a valium, lol.

Seriously, more planes crash on land than water. Most commercial airlines will fly at an altitude of 55K-60K feet over oceans. You won't see anything but clouds and maybe the outline of what appears to be looking down at an atlas. I like Japan Airlines - JAL. These people know what customer service means.

Before I was married my Japanese wasn't too bad but now it's atrocious. Obviously, my Mandarin picked up. I understand much more than I speak and I only understand at regular pace, i.e., the people that... speak... slowly... confuse... me. I also know a few words and phrases in Taiwanese (taiyuu not mandarin) but that's completely by accident. The one I know the least of is Russian. I kind of want to post with Sveta to practice but I don't want to treat her like a free language service, lol.

I can read and write okay in all of them. I don't always understand what I'm reading but I can sound it out. Just not Anglicized, it's too hard to read Russian, Chinese or Japanese in English. I need to see it as is.

I used to read and write Latin, which is rather useless except for the background in root words. In retrospect I suppose that was quite useful. Out of that mishmash what I need to buckle down on is Mandarin. Reading and writing is very useful but I'm a mom now and we spend enough time in Taiwan where I need to be able to take care of things under pressure like if I have to call for emergency services or talk to hospital staff. I can't have that liability.

Russian I just like. There's no need it's all for fun.
