The "Sex Photos Gate" is a farce. At this time, the uploaders have been arrested but the Hong Kong citizens are unhappy. They wanted to march on February 10 to protest the unfairness of the Hong Kong police who only know to go after small citizens while ignoring the source.

They marched yesterday to the Wanchai police headquarters to protest the threatening words from Commissioner of Police Tang King-shing, who said that possession of large numbers of obscene articles may be inferred to be evidence of intent to distribute. The awareness of Hong Kong citizens is high and, under "one country, two systems," they could march to express their will in front of the police station. This was also a fight between rights and powers. In a normal democratic society, the powers have to listen to the sounds of the rights even if they are reluctant to do so.

However, one must be wary that the improper actions of the police have triggered inappropriate demands -- 70% of netizens voted to de-criminalize uploading and they also wanted the police to arrest Edison Chen for taking the photographs and being the source. But this is demanding the authorities to hurt another victim. Chen may be the photographer, but he is also a victim whose privacy has been invaded. Unless the photographs were taken by force, it is not against the law to take such photographs; the criminals are those who circulated the photographs on the Internet.

No matter how you look at it, this was a major invasion of privacy that caused severe mental distress on the principals. In examining this case, we see that the authorities must not selectively enforce the law. When that happens, there will be a reaction from the citizens whose rights are infringed upon. Once the people are incensed, conflicts among various rights may lead to more injustice and damages.

Edison Chen, the only male celebrity to be implicated by the scandal, will return to Hong Kong to face the media this week, his management confirmed today. Ms Leung, of East Asia Music, said that Edison will arrive back in Hong Kong on Thursday or Friday. She denied that he had left the country to avoid the fallout from the scandal. Edison is supposedly going to help police catch the insider who is releasing the photos.

Anthony Wong Chau Sang, Edison's godfather, said that Edison will return to Hong Kong soon to help the police to catch the "crazy man" who is leaking the sex photos. He commented that Edison did not run away and had, long before the scandal started, planned to return to Canada to visit family for Chinese New Year and then to go to America to visit girlfriend Vincy Yeung.

Today Hong Kong authorities caught the ninth suspect without Edison’s help. There have been protests in the streets, and complaints that Edison is just as guilty as the suspects who have been caught. There are also complaints that the people involved are getting a free pass because they are celebrities.

Miriam Yeung, who made an appearance yesterday at a Chinese New Year event at Harbour City as guest of honour,
and is Edison Chen’s godsister, said she had been sending text messages of support, but did not wish to comment on the scandal. As for suggestions that her name will also appear on the list of female celebrities involved in the scandal,

Miriam said that she did not want to comment any further and with the scandal bringing down the general morality in society, she did not want to perpetuate the reports any further. When reporters asked if her parents had questioned her about the incident, she said that her mother trusts her completely and she has her own integrity, so after 12 years in the industry, she has no need to explain herself.

Nat Chan, Bobo Chan’s former boss, said that he had not called her when the scandal hit the news, but said that he was quite worried about her situation. As for suggestions that her engagement had been cancelled as a result of the scandal, Nat refused to comment.
