Racism

Racism. We all know what it means, how it feels or heard from friends and family who went through it. It will happen to all of us at some point in the future. Most of us have felt it during the present or the past. For those that have experienced it, tell us what the situation was, how it made you feel, what did you do about it, and most importantly - what did you learn from it that help shape you today??

Only racism that i experience is due to my religion. I am Jewish, and while growing up in America, i experienced a feeling of being different and isolated. I never felt included, but always felt different. Most i knew celebrated christmas, and often wished me merry christmas. They would ignore the fact that i am Jewish, and i would tell them i am Jewish. It wouldn't be easier when some people i met wanted to convert me to christianity, thinking that just because i am curious, i wanted to convert. I am curious because i want to learn, not convert! These feelings caused me to pay more attention to minorities, and how they would be ignored. I think going through these feelings gave me understanding on how some minorities feel. Sometimes i think i could relate to an asian guy better than to other guys. I never saw my experiences mirrored in media, nor did i have a role model to look up to. Hope it made sense, and if it offends anyone, i apologize.

When I first came to the US in the '80s, I was pretty shocked and angered to experience racism first hand. Here are just a few examples:

1) Riding in my mom's car and saw a group of kids in the back of a school bus (maybe third graders) pulling their eyes back and mocking Asians.
2) A couple of guys in their 20s doing the same in a Toyota pick-up. You see the irony there? A Toyota pick-up! I was 12 and didn't know whether to laugh or cry.
3) First Halloween in the US. We could dress-up to go to school that day. A classmate of mine dressed as a "tourist" he said. He had a camera and pretended to snap pictures all day. Here's the kicker- he had clear tape that he used to stretch his eyes so it looked "Japanese". Of course the teachers did nothing.
4) In Bible class (yes, I went to a Christian school), the class clown who said this out loud so the whole row could hear "hey, it's getting 'nippy' in here, you 'chink' so?"

Those are just a few that I could remember off the top of my head.

The racism that I tend to get is when people I don't know well realize I am attracted to Asian men. They would ask me why like it's something so unheard of that it stinks. I actually got alot of racist comments from white guys saying things like "You like chinks and not your own race?", and they would look at me like I had some kind of mental illness or disease. The thing is, I never told them I didnt like men of my own race. What I said is that Asian men were my preference. But I made sure to tell them that if their behaviour is any indication of most white men's behaviour then it's no wonder I prefer Asian men. That usually shuts them up. It really used to piss me off big time up until a couple of years ago.

I have had to deal with that kind of attitude and racist remarks from white guys quite alot. I just ignore it and go on doing what the hell I was doing. I'm not responsible for someone else's ignorance.

brian39nj is on a distinguished road
A week ago, USA Today's started a Special Report. Its front page top
headline screamed "Combat Chinese Spying." http://www.usatoday.com/money/world/...-22-china-spy- 1_N.htm?csp=34
Two days later, Part 2 of the Report headlined
"Against China's Tech Spies." In San Francisco, FBI placed ads in
Chinese papers seeking information on persons and events endangering
our national security.
They don't do such stories/reports on Israel. Britain, Russia, etc., even though they spy on the U.S. a lot more than China, at least partially because of racism and partially because Asian Americans are politically powerless.

I dont think wishing someone who isnt christian a merry christmas is based on racism. In fact when I wish my friends a merry christmas I do it because I love my friends and want to show them they are welcome to feel happy and celebrate a holiday with me and NOT feel left out.

Everyone feels left out sometimes cause they are different.. big small tall short asian black.

Racism is when someone makes negative assumptions about you about your ethnicity or religion and there for discriminates against you. Racism is also those who use their minority to cheat others or themselves out of doing. Such has the term "he played the race card"

Most racism or biasness towards ethnicity I feel is on the internet. I am proud of my heritage and want to share that but in no way do I not appreciate other ethnicities. When I was in a chat a long time ago...some guy went off about italian girls being hairy and dirty and sleeping around. It hurt me cause this person judged me on a total fabrication.

I read alot of articles at older sites where asian men write about how horrible white girls are and it hurts. In one myspace group some guy said he raped a white girl cause she thought he was japanese not korean. It just irked me at his hate.

It scares me cause i want to be one of the people who see others as human beings with hearts.

My God, that is TERRIBLE.. to rape someone just because she is white and mistook his ethnicity? Some men can be pigs no matter what their race is. That idiot needs to be ashamed to even be taking up space and living, by the sounds of it. That is quiet idiotic for him to be telling that crap anyway.

Unfortunately, there are some bitter Asian men out there that use other race women (more often than not it seems to be white women) to get back at the other races. It's sad and retarded, but it's true. But regardless of those type, I still love Asian men overall. It didn't change my mind. Then again, I am not one to let a small group change my way of feeling and thinking.
