Not uncommon and quite the contrary to what most would think that america is behind all this (aka domestic slavery). Many mail order brides endure similar abuse. Few yrs ago, a chinese woman in NYC was charged with similar crimes. The women in that case were filipinas. Often it is the contrarian viewpoint of the guilty, that customs and practices ignored by local laws in 3rd world countries should be maintained under the eyes of western societies. In a sense it is a slap in the face of western justice that they maintain such practices which pseudo supercedes above the law because it was their right of maintainance to a certain lifestyle of acceptability from the old country.

I think it has an equal amount to do with the desperation and the customs of the enslaved person's culture as well as the culture of the one that enslaved them. Of course, in the case of the Indonesian women, they were held against their wills and had no other choice but to work in servitude until one saw the chance to runaway. And in a way- they sacrificed themselves for the sake of their impoverished families. However, not many people in enslavement are offered the same route of escape. I can guarantee you that mail order brides don't get married to complete strangers because they want to. It is because they have to in order to survive. The whole underground sex-slavery ring is based solely on slavery. Brothels in India hold women captive and India's government turns a blind eye to the whole ordeal. Yes, in many cultures, a woman is dispensable-as soon as she is worn out or catches a disease it's alright because there are plenty of poor parents who see no other way to care for their families unless they sell their daughters into slavery. But due to the girl's upbringing-they never put up a fight and accept the "hand they are dealt" so to speak. The girl's in these cases also sacrifice themselves for the sake of their family.

And it's sad to say, that this same sickening slavery is going on right here in America and the government does nothing about it. And when they do- the evil people always end up going to another country to escape punishment. It's aggravating, really.

I will never understand what makes people behave the way they do.

This is just disgusting. They should lock them up in a cell and treat them the same way they treated those women.

Prison systems are pretty bad- she could possibly get raped by inmates... I think that's sad even though she is a horrible person. I wouldn't wish for anything like that to happen to anyone.
