Goodbye to an old friend!
My dog of 13 years had to be put down today. I had prepared myself for it, but I didn't expect it to have such an emotional toll. He couldn't walk anymore and he was having a hard time keeping his balance. He couldn't hear or see anymore... But I loved that dog. Dogs give you so much more than what you can ever give them and I will miss him dearly.

I don't know what I'd do without mine. I lost my favorite cat of 20 years a few months ago myself. My dog morned harder than anyone, missing her friend. She would hide in the corner and only come down to eat. Eventually she learned to live without the cat, but she's so dependent on me. Sandi is 11 years old now and starting to slow down. She can't see as well, and gets tired more easily. Still she loves to play with her toys and if you tell her there are birds outside she still goes to the window to look out in case she needs to chase them.

These are not pets. They are family. And they love without strings unlike human companions. I think this is why one can love dogs and cats more than people in a way. Or rather it's a more basic and pure love. Us humans are complex.

A friend sent me a poem and that made me both cry and feel relieved at the same time. I found this one for you.

The dogs who've shared our lives.
In subtle ways they let us know
their spirit still survives.
Old habits still make us think
we hear a barking at the door.
Or step back when we drop
a tasty morsel on the floor.
Our feet still go around the place
the food dish used to be,
And, sometime, coming home at night,
we miss them terribly.
And although time may bring new friends
and a new food dish to fill,
That one place in our hearts
belongs to them...
and always will.

that was really nice...I'm sure it's going to help jacs out with her day too.

a few years after I said goodbye....I felt him in my room a few times....that was really something. I was sad about something else...and I felt as though if he came and put his head on my thigh...I can't type anymore...how embarrassing...I'm in a public compi room balling right now. I have to go to the bathroom.

My dog got a splinter in his right eye....and started dig in deep....I couldn't afford his surgery...so my friends took him in to SPCA as an abused dog...to a non kill adoption just to have him saved...

I never saw him die....He got adopted by some one who can afford an very expensive surgery...He used to keep a few local elderly women happy...and he got adopted by someone who needed company...he was good at that.

One morning I knew he died....it wasn't too long after we parted...maybe I killed him by leaving but he had days to go without that surgery...
