Good God, I agree with you Bastet. I would never put an animal down that isn't ill or in great pain and suffering, just to bury it with it's owner etc. That is just so wrong. And YOU aren't the one that's being selfish, SHE is. Good God, what a stupid ass crazy thing to ask for.
A reasonable request? WTF? If you love an animal, you would want it to live on and be happy, not intentionally put it down just because you want to be buried with it. I think you are right. Your mother is not all there right now. I think perhaps for the dogs sake, before she does something to it, you should go ahead and give her away. I don't blame you for thinking that's wacked

Ok yeah, that's one messed up request.
I don't blame you at all. I wouldn't do it either. Your mother is obviously only thinking of herself in this. I mean you will have to not only mourn her, but the dog as well. And how would she feel if you asked the same thing of her? She probably wouldn't do it either. She is being selfish asking you to do such a thing. It is murder plain and simple to intentionally end the life of an animal just for the sole purpose of burying it with the owner. There is no reason to justify doing that if the animal is not sick or in miserable pain and agony. It's wrong and I don't blame you at all for refusing it. However, Pro is right. Perhaps think of a way to get the dog away from her before she does something drastic. It sounds like your mother is definitely not in her right mind with this. Is she taking some strong medication that might affect her thinking? |

thank you pro & blitz. I called my aunt and she doesn't believe my mother would go through with it. She would be the best one to take the dog to as she has a big yard and other animals to play with. She said she would talk with her. I don't know if she did or not. It gets even more difficult of a situation as I'm staying with her currently as I'm trying to get back on my feet financially. So I'm pretty sure if I stole her dog from her, the locks would be changed. If I were on my own, I'd take the dog in a heartbeat.
Biker, not sure if I should say thank you for the well wishes or be a little bit disturbed that you found my story funny. I guess I'm a bit blinded by the situation to see what's so humorous so forgive me. I know your comments meant well. Between trying to save the dog yesterday, being stressed and working a 11 hr day, I'm finally going to hit the hay. I only got 1 1/2 hours sleep in the past two days. |

I'm not sure if I am understanding this correctly, but is your mother very ill and might pass away soon? I am not really sure why this subject would come up now otherwise. If she is to pass in the near future, I am so sorry.
I wouldn't do it either. I would not put down an animal that is perfectly healthy and not in pain. That's very wrong of her to ask you to do something like that just because she is afraid to be buried alone. Kudos to you for sticking up to her and telling her flat out "NO" to her request. It's stupid |

Aww I hope you feel better. If your mother brings it up again, do not react, just ignore it. Hopefully by then she'll have forgotten about it and the dog can live on. But yeah, it's a cruel thing to kill an animal just for the sake of having it go with you, especially if it's healthy and fine. I don't think the humane society would allow someone to do that. They usually ask why you want to put it down.

She's worried about her heart. Apparently she has a very clogged aortic valve. The doctors aren't doing anything but monitoring it (it's not bad enough for the HMO to operate on, but bad enough to worry about), but our family has a history of not living past 75. She's 70 now.
I wish I could blame this on medications. Hell, I'd like to medicate her sometimes! No, this is all her. In her mind everyone is against her and we all think she is stupid. She believes the dog is the only one who loves her. It's just this behavior and ideas that are going to prove her right. |

Bastet, I understand how this kind of mind set she has is making you feel.
My mother was a lot like that. My mother died when she was still young. She had emphasema and it took her. She was always selfish in her lifetime before the disease, but as she got worse, her behaviour got much worse. She would demand all kinds of crazy shit. My sister and I just about went nuts towards the end. She was calling wanting all kinds of crazy things and asking us to do this and that. It was like that a few months before she passed. She was calling me at work 20 times a day until my boss bitched about it and I had to make her stop calling. She went totally overboard. I understood she was ill, but it still was very hard to deal with. I hope you get this sorted out. Perhaps your aunt is right and your mother won't go through with it. But it does set you on edge worrying though.

I'm so sorry to hear this Bastet! I mean this with all due respect, but is deception out of the question? Dementia is very troubling, and I'm not saying that your mother is suffering from it necessarily, but if she is then I think you should consider letting her believe whatever she needs to in order to die peacefully, while keeping the dog alive secretly of course. I realize there are a lot of moral constraints involved in deceiving her, but I think its your best bet for saving the dog. If she believes her wishes will be fulfilled she won't put the dog down before she dies, and then you certainly won't do it after she dies. I know its dishonest, but I don't see how you can rationalize with her on this anymore and still save the dog. Hopefully, your aunt will be able to get through to her though.
