Two maiko, or apprentice geiko, and a maiko trainee living in the Gion Kobu entertainment district of Kyoto have released a love song that mentions some of the city's scenic spots and traditional events.
Kyoto Enren Monogatari tells the story of a long-distance romance, with a melody reminiscent of the music of the Showa era (1926-1989).
Known collectively as Koimaiko, the two maiko--Sayaka, 17, and Kyoka, 16--and trainee Hitomi, 16, rehearsed and refined the song over four months, taking time out from their lessons in dance and other arts, before recording the song and releasing it in early January. They live together in the same ocha-ya maiko teahouse.
Singer-songwriter Hiroshi Madoka penned the tune and the lyrics, which name-checks such local highlights as Kyoto Tower and the Daimonji Gozan Fire Festival, which sees bonfires lit on five nearby mountains.
Kyoto Enren Monogatari is available on CD from record shops, a kiosk in JR Kyoto Station and a number of restaurants and other places in Kyoto.
