Comments from an Asian man: Beautiful Women Syndrome and Picky Guy Syndrome (3)

So, from my last writing on my encounter with my old ESL teacher, I have been getting some messages or comments that I am too emotional (and serious) in my writing. Man, what is wrong with guy being emotional?! It is not “guyish” thing to do, they say. And then of course, last weekend in chatting room here, I had someone telling me I must be a LADY because I used color pink for my font. What, a guy have no rights to use color pink?! I will use pink for all I want! I wear pink shirts occasionally, and I will do it proudly! I am “manly” enough to be confident with it! Perhaps I will wear pink pants later! Perhaps I will wear pink shoes one day! Wait, that is really gay…

Anyhow, today I wanted to talk about something somewhat less serious and emotional for fun. But it nevertheless has some realistic points (I hope). Its what is called “beautiful women syndrome” and “picky guy syndrome.” The first term (BWS) is not my invention though; it has been created by Dr. Pezzi, an ER doctor who likes to write about his romance life. I am going to talk about these two syndromes, and see if you guys have any similar experience on these topics.

Disclaimer: I am going to be very sarcastic in this writing. So don’t take too many things seriously. I am just having fun in this writing 

I. Beautiful Women Syndrome (BWS):
-These women, who are not just attractive, but stunningly gorgeous and pretty, are characterized by severely warped sense of reality. Because of their innate physical advantage in life, they are used to getting things much easier than anyone in life. They also have an exaggerated sense of self-worth, typically because guys they meet give them many compliments. These women believe they are not only hot, but intelligent, funny, socially intuitive, and very accomplished (the reality is often false). They believe so because they are used to meeting so many guys (that want to get into these women’s pants) who give them repetitious complements on their qualities other than the women’s appearance.

DISCLAIMER: BWS does not apply to ALL attractive women. Some women definitely are beautiful both inside and outside 

Story 1:

I once met a woman who complained to me (in a somewhat seductive manner, which I conjecture she does to any man she meets) that she had such a hard time finding the “right” guy. There was no doubt she was gorgeous, but she really thought she deserved more than I imagined. She wanted someone accomplished (subtext read as a doctor, lawyer, or corporate executive), rich (translated as over 500K TAKE HOME income a year), funny, sincere, and (this is the best part) SOMEONE WHO WILL LOVE HER NOT BECAUSE OF HER LOOKS. Of course, when I asked her why she thinks she deserved such a guy (not in an offended way but in a joking manner…I was having fun with this one ), she said: she is someone attractive, entertaining, deep, intellectual…and she went on more with about 15 more positive descriptive words that I can’t recall all now. I found only one of her self-description to be true though…guess which one it was.

At the end of the talk, I told her I thought the only man she deserves is someone “perfect” like Jesus. She laughed and thought I was giving her an ultimate compliment with the implication that only a perfect deity being deserved her. I didn’t mean that of course though; I was being sarcastic. I mean, if she was smart enough to understand what it means to “marry” Jesus…I was telling her to become a nun, and SHE JUST DIDN’T GET IT. I was implying that the chance of her finding her man was zero, and that her attitude made her as attractive as a granny nun would be to me. I still wonder if she has all her cerebral cortex in her brain cavity of her cranium...Oh, later, her (smarter) friend interpreted my joke for her, and she later asked me in a somewhat angry tone what I meant by what I said. I politely smiled and said, “everything you imagine in your head, babe.” That didn’t go well with her.

II. Picky Guy Syndrome (PGS)

-Yes, I invented this terminology (or phraseology if you want to argue that is a partial sentence). PGS describes a typical man in America who believes that he deserves a woman that looks like a model girl in the magazine cover; at the same time, he wants her to be loving, sincere, caring, and worshipping him. He has a very similar mental structure like a woman afflicted with Beautiful Woman Syndrome, but there is a big difference, which I will describe with my story below:

Story 2:

I was walking out of my gym yesterday after the workout. I had adrenaline running, feeling great, and then ran into a group of rednecks (sorry if this offends you, but they were) that were looking at Maxim. Oh I am so sorry, they corrected me and said they were READING the thing. They had a lively discussion going on too. It was about which girl was hottest in the magazine (which they called a book). Now, as the discussion went on, some of these started talking about how this one girl had her teeth looking weird, how that girl had her curve that was not ideal to him, etc etc.

As I listened, I had some thought going across my mind. I am a guy too full with adrenaline and TESTOSTERONE, but seriously, if you met possibly one of the worst looking women in this magazine, she probably won’t give you a time of her day. Oh no, that is an understatement. Let me rephrase it more accurately. SHE WILL PROBABLY LAUGH AT YOU FOR EVEN ATTEMPTING TO MAKE A CRITIQUE ABOUT HER APPEARANCE.

I mean, do these guys look at the mirror now and then? I thought they need some reality checked up. I am guy with a certain ego of mine too but these guys were DEFINITELY out of shape, working in lousy part time job or have NO job, and…oh I will leave the rest to your imagination. But seriously, fellow man, let us not get over our head and act like authoritative judge of women’s appearance. They are dress up pretty to please themselves…not us. Instead of wasting seconds talking about a minor imperfection in some girl’s smile, let us do one more crunch and get that extra line in the abdominal rectus.

That’s it for now guys. Again, I was just having fun today, so I hope no one takes it too seriously.

I enjoyed your story about the ESL teacher, and I'm guessing that much of the criticism you received came from the male members of the group. Women often appreciate a man who can display his sensitive side, and I think a man who can show his emotions is refreshing ... and kind of sexy .. hee hee. I agree that the pink shoes might be a bit over the top, though ... :-P

Your observations are intelligent, astute and amusing. Keep up the good work ... we can always use a shot of wit, even laced with a dose of sarcasm. I will look forward to your next entertaining thread .. :-D

We've all come across these 2 extremes. BWS certainly wasn't the originated term; others include dumb blonde, trophy wife, gold digger, "marilyn monroe", etc. albeit they are the slang versions. Appearances do matter although the syndrome you describe is on the far right of the histogram. In real life people and employers place physical attraction first before other equally important attributes. It's the animal instinct in all of us. First perception and mental stereotype we make of a person's appearance determine what we "think" they are like as we are not all mind readers but generalize from characatures from interactions, daily life experiences, and of course the almighty media. Studies have shown time and time again attractive people get better jobs, get paid more, obtain higher profile positions, front line roles, etc. Whether it's fair or not is another debate. And of course the qualifier is not all attractive people are stupid and not all fugly looking dudes are geeky einstein Bill Gates wannabe's. Yea, that was the PC statement of the day. lol.

As for the Picky Guys syndrome, I think we all do that - pick and judge whether we are GQ material ourselves or not. It's the basis of humans to give an opinion and again, whether it's right or not. Not just rednecks but I've seen many races of varying socio-cultural backgrounds and income levels do the same thing. Rank and rate Playboy and Penthouse Playmates - now who on this forum hasn't done that? Even females rank and rate other females as well as guys. It's just the impression the guys you describe come off as ignorant vs. physical appearances that puts them in a category as being pitied. Reminds me of 2 "dorky looking" south asian guys ineptly discussing shop techniques of soddering wood work on the subway. Now replace that with Maxim and it's aiken the same thing.

As for Fadeaway dressing 'Pretty in Pink' I much prefer Julia Roberts, umm.. no offense!

fun thread

but i kinda disagree when you said the girl are dressed up pretty to please themselves. models get paid and sell their images to please others like the ones who purchased the magazine.
obviously not all readers of the magazine would be the male equivalent of the models in it--you know, tall, dark, and muscular guys--and i suspect they know it themselves. when they're commenting on the models' looks, it's not quite the same as girls with BWS. those girls are genuinely deluded and think they are special and are actively on lookout for prince charmings. the guys who buy magazines, on the other hand, are buying fantasy. most of them are fully aware that they don't much stand a chance with those girls on the magazine covers. they just want a temporary reprieve from the reality after a hard day's work (or after an insanely dull day) by imagining as if they can pick any one of the girls in the magazine.

what, how do i know their psychology?
*slides the maxim magazine on the floor under the bed*
i, uh..., am a sympathetic person

Also, have you seen the models without makeup and fotoshopping? I bet you wouldn't recognize most of them if they walked past you. Hair, makeup, and lighting can do wonders for anyone. Quite frankly, Kate Moss is quite fugly with a joint in her hand sans the latter. Those untouched paparazzi shots can destroy any adolescent fantasy. LOL.

I thought your teacher story was very touching. Don't let other guys tell you it was girly. You just keep on being yourself and writing what you want to.

And you should write in pink, wear pink or talk pink all you want to.
