Would you die for him/her?

Interesting topic I saw on another forum. Under what circumstances would you die for him/her? Thoughts, opinions?

Quote:
One of the rather 'dinosaur' traits I have left over from my neanderthal upbringing; and probably fueled by my work with the crisis center; is the need to be a protector.

Any female whose ever known me can tell you I'm a total sap for a crying female. It's the easiest way to get what she wants from me. Although out of necessity, I've gotten pretty good at recognizing alligator tears so I'm not that easy.

Amanda and I watched 28 Weeks Later tonight and she woke up about an hour ago after having had a nightmare. I am always grateful for a chance to offer my shoulder and hugs while she cries it out. It's almost a feral emotion that I've never bothered to try and correct.

But after a while, she let me know it wasn't the blood and body parts that invaded her usually peaceful sleep, but the early scene where the father of the two children deserted his wife to the monsters as a means of self-preservation. I know her history so I can understand how she might have some fears of abandonment.

I was quick to respond "In a heartbeat" when she asked if I would die for her. I mean I've been here for a number of decades and seen some of the best and worst this place has to offer. I'm never sure what is the greatest achievement; television, computers, space travel, the internet (except for chat) or simply inching closer to equality without concern for gender, race or borders.

I've also seen some of the worst with newer and more efficient ways to murder thousands of people because of politics or religion, an increase in personal assaults and the disintegration of the 'hive' mentality of society where some races prefer to segregate themselves from others. I will admit there was a time I thought the worst was disco but thankfully, that died a quick death.

So it makes sense to willingly take her place if the need arises. Out with the old, in with the new, if you will. But I answered so quickly, I answered the wrong question. When she asked if I would die for her, I presumed it would mean she would survive. What she really meant was if it was assured that she would not survive some horrific event, would I join her rather than face some post-apocalyptic world?

That's a much more difficult question and one that took considerably more time to answer. So now I'm having a bout of insomnia (not unusual because of my nightmares) and wondering how the rest of you would respond.

To die for someone's selfish want of company in the afterlife is so absurd I can't see anyone asking such a question but my response would be "i'll miss ya!". In reality though if I had the option of sacrificing myself to save someone I truly cared for, some I loved with all my heart I would say there is a good possibility. I can't say for sure because I thankfully never been in the position. Krusty the clown will not be reaping the rewards of my hara-kiri.

The original question seems like a very odd one. Asking someone to simply die, without it really benefiting anyone or saving anyone's life. If I was in a deeply loving relationship I can't see myself asking my partner to simply die like that for basically no reason, and I can't see her asking me to do that either (I figure she loves me in the same way).
If the question is about sacrificing myself for her, yes I would do it in a heartbeat. But, believe it or not there would be a nagging doubt in my mind as I make my decision. I would be thinking that I'm leaving her to suffer life without my companionship, and that would be quite a great regret.

Yes, the question is about sacrificing... here's the premise from the OP's quote... although the movie scenario given doesn't match. The father was trying to save his own ass. lol.
