Actually I'm all for it. Marriage is just glorified ritual that governments use as a ploy to tax your ass. I don't see much of any tangible benefits of getting hitched other than your open vow of devotion to your significant other. And you'll save yourself some money from expending all your hard earned cash on the ceremony and reception if you just live in sin.

Living together is a good way to figure out if you'll mesh with your partner before you decide to clamp on the ball and chain. Most people though, tend to get get overwhelmed or grow tired of their partner's constant presence - especially true once you figure out their little annoyances and bad habits. Some people even lose interest in the relationship because the mystique is gone and the "thrill of the chase" has ended.

Do yourself and your partner a favour and live in sin. Besides, what's the big deal of spending a little bit of eternity in hell?

In most states and provinces, getting married and co-habitation are the same under the eyes of the law. Get ready to pay the same alimony/child support check. Companies on legal documents will common-law status in most cases, after 3 years.. So if you thought about that car lease, mortgage payment, insurance policy to off her and get paid? Think again, it will go to the surviving children/rights of survivor ship under common law marriages. The best way to co-habitate is to maintain separate residences, all documents in individual names, and pay own expenses. So when it comes to division of assets, it's a zero sum game.

For me personally, I don't have to get legally married to have a commitment to someone. It's all about the spirit of your relationship and trust.

In fact, in Wicca, you can make a ceremony between the two of you where you make vows to each other. You live together like you are married but you have no marriage license and you didn't do it legally. But it's the vows you made to each other that makes it a "marriage" between you. It's the love, spirit and trust of your relationship that makes it.. not a piece of paper.

Although I agree some people feel more protected with property etc to get legally hitched. But I personally don't need that to feel committed to someone.

I agree with all the above. It's only necessary if you need an official notice or legal certification that you're married. And as North pointed out, watch out for the laws if you think it's that much diff. in reference to property.

My boyfriend and I have been living together since Hurricane Katrina (August 2005), so we were sort of inadvertently thrust into cohabitation. We were able to side-step most of the familial scruntiny because of the tragic circumstances, but we still try to avoid discussing it around my father or our grandparents because they're old-fashioned. We also have very different beliefs on marriage and we probably won't find a suitable compromise for another couple of years.

Actually living with my boyfriend has been easier than living with anyone else. Unfortunately, we're both messy and sometimes I feel like a housewife from the '50s, but for the most part its smooth sailing.

I am glad that it is working out for both of you and you don't have to buy into the tradition thingy. Even though I am raised in a certain religion, I am beginning to think that maybe co habitation is a good thing and not get into the legal aspect of marriage.
