i know coming from a white girl it might not mean much, but my son is half korean and i think that teaching him his culture is important, BUT i also think teaching him my heritage and culture is important too, he needs to learn about all the sides of him, the korean, the puerto rican, the native american indian, the irish! and i try as hard as i can to do so. I think that no matter what your kids look like, you'll love them for WHO THEY ARE and though teaching culture is important, it's not impossible to teach them many cultural values from different cultures. hm...did i make sence there? haha

Not exactly the same perspective as you, but I do worry excessively (especially now that I'm engaged to someone who is not chinese), that our kids will not have the same cultural values that my parents and I have. I already find that my language skills are degrading from lack of use, and I think it would be a terrible shame if my kids did not speak Chinese. As far as looks are concerned, I do think our kids will be adorable, even if they look non asian, but it's really the culture, language, and values that I want to make sure pass on to the next generation.

yeah that makes sense. i know i'll love them no matter what but but but.....
so, my cousin is 6 years old. she's half korean and half chinese. she's the only cousin i have in the US. she refuses to eat kimchi, spicy foods, or anything really korean because she thinks it's going to make her smell bad. i eat korean food everyday and i never cared. it's her little remarks that freak me out even more.

yes islandia!!! that's exactly how i feel. i'm not as caught up on the appearance part as much as the cultural part. but wouldn't you be a little bummed if they didn't look asian at all? i'm afraid that my kids won't look like they're related to me. =(

I deal with that too...my son doesn't look white at all, i've had people say really rude stuff like "aww how sweet of you to adopt one of those poor chinese babies!" but i don't care what other people think about my son because the moment i start to care about that so will he

But the point is even in asia, as long you are asian "inside" and culturally express yourself linguistically like a local ( or attempt to), skin color is more often than not, forgiven. . |
