Simple question but not necessarily a simple answer.. can you ever spend the rest of your life with a single individual? Why/why not??

Not really. As much as I would like to do that...there are factors that can change my relationship with the woman of my dreams. Finances is going to be the biggest factor. I feel that this generation is way different from my grandparent's generation in a big way. With many people going through divorce and infidelity issues is a challenge to stay with one individual. That's just my view.

That should be a person who has the same values as me and one of those values would be to want to make the relationship/marriage work for the rest of our lives. Meaning that not only me but him too would know that even in bad times we will stick together no matter what. I think if both persons really want it, it can work.

I actually want to find that someone where I can spend the rest of my life with. I guess I'm still extremely traditional in that sense. As each year passes, I am becoming less hopeful. Perhaps I'm just too old-fashioned for the people of today.

i feel the same way...every year that passes (i'm almost 28 sigh) that biological clock just tick tick ticks away counting down the day my ovaries keel over and die

Yes I can be with just one individual but getting past all my reservations will be a huge hurdle.

As MrSwed said, so few people have the same values as previous generations. I want to be with someone that has similar, if not the same kind of, values as me.

Instant gratification is too fleeting for me to even want to get involved.

Actually, I don't know that I can spend my life with just one individual. Or at least I have no reason to realistically believe that I could. I eventually tire of everyone, sometimes temporarily, no matter how much I love them. If I were to spend my life with just one person, I would need significant time alone away from them periodically, but often, otherwise I might stab them.

I can spend the rest of my life with someone. I would hope to find someone who shares the same beliefs that I do, that way things mesh together well... Could you imagine a religious person with an atheist? Yeah that so wouldn't work. I agree totally with f4u.

See, even if the opinions here reflect the general consensus of the overall population, it shows why it's so hard for me. I never had problems finding people for temporary reasons. It's finding people who were willing to commit and be loyal for the long term that's difficult to find.
