The triad film genre has been one of Hong Kong cinema’s most durable and most lucrative and offers a glimpse into the realities and fantasies of triads in Hong Kong. An integral part of the territory’s cinema culture, the films have also influenced the fashion, lifestyle, and behavior of their audience, often to the concern of society and government. There also exists a unique and destructive interrelationship between the industry and the criminal organizations they portray; triad influence and involvement in production, especially piracy, have caused significant damage to the sector. It is therefore intriguing to see an industry positively portray a phenomenon which threatens to destroy it. Dr. Sean M. Tierney is an Assistant Professor at the School of Journalism and Communication at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. A graduate of the University of Rhode Island and Howard University, his research interests include Hong Kong cinema, intercultural communication, and globalization.
