Is South Asian Democracy Under Threat? Date: October 18th Time: 6:30 – 8:00 pm Location: New York Asia Society and Museum, 725 Park Avenue, New York Cost: $10 members and students; $15 nonmembers Phone: 212-517-ASIA Speakers: - Ashok Gurung, Senior Director, India-China Institute, New School University - Khalid Hasan, Washington Correspondent, Daily Times, Pakistan - Rounaq Jahan, Senior Research Scholar, SIPA, Columbia University Taking a current snapshot of South Asia’s democratic institutionalization leaves a questionable picture, at best. With the exception of India, the region has failed to exhibit a strong track-record of democratic governance. Many would argue that South Asia’s democratic experiment has not yielded the desired outcomes and in fact, it is under serious threat, as evidenced by the recent turn of events in the region. The future of democracy remains uncertain in Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Nepal and there is no guarantee that forthcoming elections in these countries will take place as scheduled. As the region braces itself for another series of critical elections, the Asia Society takes a closer look at the state of democracy in the region, explores the challenges of democracy-building, as well as examines what democratic aspirations mean to one-fifth of humanity and how to realize them, among other pertinent issues. Policy programs at the Asia Society are generously supported by the Nicholas Platt Endowment for Public Policy. |

Of course I will. There is a Taiwan Film fest in Utah and Cali.. What I would like to do is contact the media reps from that and see if there is anything on the east coast? |
