On National Day, Singaporeans just wanna have fun, and this year they got a helping hand to kick things off, courtesy of pop veterans Cyndi Lauper and Pet Shop Boys.
Lauper - whose hits include, of course, the smash hit Girls Just Want to Have Fun - and the boys were part of the line-up for the opening night on Wednesday (Aug 8) of the inaugural two-day music festival, SingFest.
Over 3,000 fans soaked up the vibe at Fort Canning Park. And many also turned up again yesterday (Aug 9) to hear up-and-comers such as American heavy metal band Avenged Sevenfold and New York hip-hoppers Gym Class Heroes.
Michael Hosking, managing director of Midas Promotions, which is behind the fiesta, said he has been asked many times over the years why Singapore doesn't have such a festival.
"Traditionally, it's been the difficulty of getting a good line-up," he explains. "We managed to do so this time as most of the artistes on the bill are heading on to Japan for the Summer Sonic festival over the weekend."
Among those enjoying the sights and sounds on Wednesday was accounts manager Goh Siow Yune, 31, who was happily grooving along to the music.
She was at SingFest to catch Lauper and the Pet Shop Boys and declared that "Pet Shop Boys are the best".
