As a mixed race Asian/non-Asian person you grow up keenly aware of the need for bone marrow matches. Many of you would not normally be aware of this but I hope to raise awareness amongst such a large number of people most likely to have mixed Asian, hapa if you prefer, children.

Though I am not discouraging anyone from banking cord blood themselves, I highly, highly encourage you to read the information provided by the Asian American Donor Program. Donating cord blood is one of the most life saving measures you can take as a concerned parent of a mixed race Asian child. We are extremely low in numbers to come up with a match. Donation is free and if you don't bank the cord yourself it goes to waste.

So when you see a cute hapa kid, or think about a future child of yours with an Asian male or in the case of Asian males, with a non-Asian female, please also consider donating the cord. In terms of what constitutes a mixed race Asian, the coverage sought is usually broken down into 1/4, 1/2, and 3/4 but don't get hung up on exact percentages. From 1/4 - 3/4 we can usually cover each other for a potential match. So even if it's only one parent that is partially Asian, you can still donate.

definately. my boyfriend-on-hold (mgb whatever we want to call him) and I already discussed this if we have kids, how it's important to save it no matter the cost. He's an MD so he's all too aware of the shortage.

I wish I had donated with my son, even though he's white. But the hospital I had my son in didn't do it. And I couldn't afford the commercial cord blood banking.

There's actually been significant progress made in the use of unrelated cord blood transplantation in the treatment of resistant cancers, rare metabolic disorders and rare inherited disorders in children.

I had to submit a second app because I messed up my first one but let's cross our fingers together and hope this app goes through without a hitch. If any of our kiddos need some hapa marrow, I'll be on tap.

^^ My fingers are crossed for you taitai! I hope it all works out. I've seen a lot of local PSAs recently about cord blood donation and I think it sounds pretty neat. I don't know why you wouldn't do it, given the option.

This one's different. It's my personal submission via the Asian American Donor Program. I'm putting my marrow up. Maybe in the spirit of the holiday season I can suggest it to the rest of my family. I can also try to guilt trip enjoi and nihonjinlover. :P

Mixed race (Asian/non-Asian) or fully Asian mixed ethnicity? Ah, heck with it. AADP needs all varieties. Anyone interested, please click on the link in my signature. All it takes to register is to swab your cheeks then fill out a paper health screen to see if you make first round qualification. You go into the database and if you match, more screening is done and you make your decision to continue each step of the way. I'll post a pic of my registration envelope to inspire.

Registration is free for Asians, whether you're Asian in full or part. You email AADP, get the kit in the mail and send it back in a pre-paid envelope they provide. My only advice is read the swab directions a couple of times before swabbing so you get the right areas.
