Any experience with meetup.com?
Just wondering if anybody has any experience with Meetup.com?

They sent me a list of upcoming events in the New York and Philadelphia areas, and (no surprise) there are 2 meetups for "Asian women and the men who love them" and zilch events for the flipside.

I am considering setting up an "Asian men and the women who love them" meetup. The advantage of involving them instead of just having our own meetup is that they claim to have thousands of members, and any newly created meetups would be advertised to all those people. (There is an Asian professional meetup group and many different singles meetup groups, so there may be some people there who would respond).

What does anybody think?

I used to run the Laurell K Hamilton meetup for Pittsburgh all I can say is Meetup attracted very strange people. I joined the Hannity meetup there and it was all psycho conservatives and well the Japanese meetup is where my ex met his new girl (yes while we were married)

so yah.. not very good experiences

I can say is the NYC laurell K hamilton group did move to yahoo groups and we formed a really nice book club.

But is it possible that it was the topics that naturally attracted some offbeat types? According to a search I just did, Laurell K Hamilton is the author of a series that combines mystery, fantasy, magic, horror, and romance. I can see that drawing a few strange folks.

And is "Hannity" Sean Hannity? He is billed as a conservative talk show host, so I'm not surprised right wingers showed up. (That's not a group I would consider joining in the first place!)

As for the Japanese meetup, it's disgusting that happened to you. There are always going to be married men lurking in singles events. Unfortunately I met one on Yahoo personals; I have reason to believe I came close to getting together with one from a Yahoo group. Laurell K Hamilton is a New York Times #1 best selling author over ten times over. She writes mystery paranormal fiction and has been billed as the top in her feild. Sean hannity is conservative but he isnt crazy conservative. I like him alot because he is agreeable and talks about things from a common guy stand point. He is never mean. I think PA is just filled with overly right or left wing people. There is no happy medium.

I can only hope my ex has a better life with his new girl and he doesnt waste her time like he did for me.

That's the best attitude to have. It's hard to get there, but it's better for you if you do let go and think positive.

to many things to look fwd too.. too many things to learn.. people to meet .. places to see. I wish I could have had the time spend on him and us as a couple back but love comes with no gaurantee right?

Its a good way to know people who share the same interests as you do.

Is that "Law of Attraction" as in "The Secret"? I recently saw the movie on On Demand, and I thought it was very inspirational. It goes beyond thinking positive.

Good to know there are good experiences with meetup, too.

Yes. It certainly is. We have came up with alot of progams lining up till the end of the year. We have movie screenings, book review discussions and also workshops for people to discuss more about "The Secret" and their life goals, etc.

Usually self-help meetups have good outcomes because the intentions are usually good. When I was in LA for various self-help meetup, everyone was like a family to me.
