Four Day Workweek Article
Four-day work week gains steam
by Tom Musbach, Yahoo! HotJobs managing editor, 3 hours 4 minutes ago Read More from This Author » Post a Comment Report Abuse Getty Images Utah has become the first state to institute a mandatory four-day work week, according to a USA Today article. "A good number of the states are encouraging their agencies and managers to offer a four-day work week whenever possible," said Leslie Scott, executive director of the National Association of State Personnel Directors. The move is designed to save money and energy, and I suspect it will boost morale and possibly productivity. I know plenty of people who work in the private sector who long for this option! Rising gas prices are making the four-day idea much more attractive across the board. Last week we asked Yahoo! HotJobs site visitors if they would be more productive if they had a four-day work week (40 hours). The result: 87% said yes, 13% said no (18,625 votes). You may be able to negotiate for this perk with your employer, using the tips in this article. Your employer may also be more amenable to the idea as a way to ease the commuting burden. Any thoughts?

Four day and even 3 day work weeks have been around a while. This is nothing new. It was always an option in factory/labor intensive industries. Automotive industry has had a 4 day long work week for the longest time. It's only now news cause of rising energy costs and low employee morale trending(regardless of energy prices). Look at it this way, a 5 day week you work 40hrs/8hrs a day. Four day week you work an extra 2 hrs to get the same number of hours or 4x10hr days. No biggie. Time flies and employers generally give you an extra break time for hrs worked past 8 by law. I would do it in a snap. So far it's not an option - yet! Fingers crossed. LOL.
