Weight Loss

Recently I lost 10 pounds, but it seems I reached a plateau. Does anyone have any tips that would jump start my metabolism? Exercises?

There's quite a bit of material on the internet on weight loss unfortunately a lot of it buried in the midst of junk advertising and lousy info. Stay away from the pills and stuff.

Rule#1 Eat healthy and regularly. Stay away from fast food and refined sugars.

Rule#2 Burn more calories through exercise than you daily caloric intake.

Rule#3 Maintain a rigid daily routine, and find a partner for your exercise for peer encouragement. (record your progress regularly and you will see miraculous differences in a very short amount of time.)

Rule#4 Don't starve your body. It will actually decrease your metabolism.

Any cardio is good, swimming especially as its a total body workout. Make sure you're working up a sweat (while not over exerting yourself) for a good length of time. If you're not sweating, you're not working out hard enough.

Swimming is one of the best cardio exercises if you have access to a pool.

I agree with CL. Do swimming or jogging for exercise. You don't want to lift weights as that will bulk up your muscles and actually can in some cases make you look bigger.

Eat about 6 small meals through the day and not your classic 3 meals a day. You will find you are never hungry that way. Pro and I do that all the time and it works for us.

Also we eat sugar free candy when we get a sweet tooth. The kind that has sweetner in it. You still get the sweetness but not so much the calories. And of course only eat it when you really are dying for something sweet

having a thyroid disorder I have far more knowledge concerning weight loss in my head than should be allowed for someone not being a nutritionist or a physical therapist..little of it seems to work for long either!

However, some really good ways to get over the hump is to omit salt from your diet as much as possible. I was eating lean protein, whole grain carbs and tons of veggies and the lower sugar fruits.

Also switching up your exercise. Mine was 4-5 days of cardio (I did 60 minutes walking at a brisk pace) 2 days of strength training (I used resistance bands) then usually 20 minutes of asanas yoga for relaxation/flexiability 4-5 nights a week.

I lost close to 40 lbs in 3 months..then got pregant, now everything is back again lol.

oh one thing that I think helped alot with metabolism, was how I breathed during cardio. It may sound mindnumbing but I used to count to make sure I kept a steady deep yoga breathing while I was walking.

All of the above suggestions are great. I want to add that if you need something more structured, WeightWatchers really does work!!! I was on it last year, and I lost over 30 lbs. It is a sensible program that encourages you to do all the things you know you should do anyway, like exercise, drink a lot of water, eat more vegetables and fruits, etc. I liked its flexibility in that no food is off limits--you just have to budget it in your weekly "points" allowance. I could have Chinese food or whatever I wanted. If you do a lot of exercise, you can choose to lose weight more quickly or earn the right to eat more.

I don't know why I waited so long to try it.

ya weight watchers is one of the best programs out there since they actually teach you how to eat rather than trying to sell you their food or pills or whatever else.

Most of my advice came from the Thyroid Diet book...probably way too strict for the average dieter.

Actually that's what I am doing! I eat 6 times a day-small meals with no salt. And I drink lots of water so I lost 10 lbs so far-I'm aiming for 20. I'll look into sugar free candy cuz I do have a sweet tooth.

Alright I'll go swimming then and try to do sit ups... I really hate exercising.
